Popular culture is what everyone sees, hears, and follows every day. It is the way we all live. We all are influenced by our pop culture icons/artifacts.
An understanding of popular culture is relevant in a business environment, and in a career because things change quite frequently. For example, you need to stay on top of what the current trends are, such as: new movies, music, shows, clothes, etc. Following the every changing trends would be to staying current with the culture. That does play, in my thoughts, a significant role in any type of environment.
I would consider American Idol to be a great example of a pop culture artifact. I chose this mainly because of the popularity of the show. This show has proven to have a strong influence over the younger generation, since a lot of people tend to try out for this show. This show has also a huge influence in the older generation. The media ratings have proven this. This show has been around for a few years now and it looks as if it has no signs of stopping.

I think that American Idol is a perfect example of Pop Culture! It attracts and (even more so) influences the masses...and we come back for more and more. The show is discussed at work and school, by the young and old....
In turn, we can see the influence in our pop music, clothes and thanks to some... even hairstyles! Great job!
I think you made a good choice. Though the reality show genre is filled with programs that get great ratings despite having little redeeming value, "Idol" gives viewers a massive number of superficial but compelling reasons to watch. Love it or hate it, there's no turning away. Idol" has been on for a few years now. It's almost impossible to own a television set without having ever seen the program. One would think that viewers would realize that if they try out, they risk severe ridicule and embarrassment on national television. But every year, there's no shortage of brutal clips for the producers to choose from. I think the judges always give the viewers something to talk about, be it their outfits, their feelings about their contestants or their banter with each other and with host Ryan Seacrest.
I think you are right on the Idol comments. I think the reality craze is a way for many people to live through the mistakes, and successes of others. The brutal clips that Gloria mentioned are not limited to Idol, but can be seen on all of the reality shows. I wonder what people think of themselves when they watch the show months later. Good blog.
